Whether you’re new to the area or just coming back to dance, finding a class that will work for you can be a struggle. Here are a few key things to keep in mind when looking for your next movement fix:
1. Search for dance classes for your age-
While dancing with kids can be fun, there is nothing like taking a class with students your age. Instead of just searching for “dance classes”, try adding the terms adult, pre-professional, or professional to your search. This will help you find age appropriate groups where you can flourish.
2. Dance style-
There are innumerable styles of dance out there and each one has its own feel and aesthetic. If you want to have the best experience, it helps to know what style of dance works for you. Often the name of the style will be a part of the class title. If you just want to move, I would recommend contemporary. It is a great style combining a lot of influences. If you are not worried about style, then any opportunity to dance could be a workout and a great learning experience.
3. Skill level-
It is always more rewarding to be working with people at your same level. There is no shame in giving your body time to adjust to new movements or in working to get back in shape. Choosing the right level of dance class makes it easier to keep coming back. Fortunately, many professional dance companies will have workshops where you can go and experience dance at different levels. These companies often have people willing to talk with you and give recommendations for which classes to take.
If you take all of these steps into account you should be able to find a dance class that will work for you. The best way to see if something is a good fit is to try it! If it’s not a good fit, that’s okay. Try talking with other dancers in your community. They may know other dance opportunities that you haven’t found yet. Remember, a big part of adult dance classes, past the actual dancing, is the community. Try to find a community that will support and encourage you to become the best you can be.
We have a great community of dancers here at Wasatch Contemporary Dance Company! In fact, we offer three classes weekly that are for adults and are open to the public! You can find all the details here on our website. You’ll find a class for all levels! In addition, we offer seasonal dance workshops as opportunities to improve, take classes from guests, and to connect with other dancers. Our next workshop is quickly approaching on Saturday, October 26th at Just Dance Arts Academy! Adam Dryer, Rebecca Aneloski, as well as Sarah Godfrey, Taryn Khong and more awesome guests, will be teaching us at this workshop! Find more info here. See you there!!
We have also compiled a list of ALL the adult dance classes (that we could find, anyway) from Spanish Fork to Salt Lake. Find that list HERE.
